THOUSANDS IGNORE POLICE INTIMIDATION TO DEMAND JUSTICE FOR CLIMATE REFUGEES

Climate No Borders
Monday 14th December 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Over 2,000 activists from ‘No Borders’ [1] marched today in Copenhagen from
Israel Plads to the Danish Ministry of Defense to highlight the increasing
links between militarization, climate change and displacement of peoples
searching for safe and secure living conditions across the world, particularly
in the Global South.

During the march, the news broke out regarding the G77 delegates resistance to
accepting insufficient agreement from the Copenhagen negotiations, to a cheer
from the crowd.

The colourful protest started at 12:00 and finished at 14:00. The demonstration
was surrounded by riot police for the entire march even though the No Borders
Network had received legal permission for the march. By the end of the
demonstration street medics reported one broken hand from a baton strike and
two dog bites, one of which was sustained by a journalist.

Danish police teargas climate detainees

Danish police used teargas to restore order after disturbances broke out at a
detention centre where scores of climate change protesters were being held, a
spokesman says.

Police spokesman Henrik Moeller Jakobsen said on Monday that the “incident” on
Sunday night was triggered when a number of detainees “used a bench as a
battering ram to force open the door” at the centre in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen's policing by design

Naomi Klein

The Danish need for control is a real problem at the climate talks, where
protesters should be able to connect with delegates

On Saturday night, after a week of living off of conference centre snack bars, a
group of us were invited to a delicious home-cooked meal with a real live Danish
family. After spending the evening gawking at their stylish furnishings, a few
of us had a question: why are Danes so good at design?

“We’re control freaks,” our hostess replied instantly. “It comes from being a
small country with not much power. We have to control what we can.”

Shocking news from the Legal Team

Legal Team "Rusk" has made public that police repeatedly used pepper spray in
the cages where jailed protestors were being held during the last days. The
reason given is that some people were making noise.

In some cases the police even took the people's water out of the cages
afterwards.

Protests in Copenhagen: Rights groups press for inquiry into police tactics

Denmark may be breaching European law, Danish human rights groups claimed
tonight as they called for their government to launch an immediate inquiry
after police in Copenhagen used controversial kettling and mass preventative
arrest tactics for the third day running.

Following the arrest of 68 people on Friday, and 958 yesterday on Saturday,
police today arrested 257 demonstrators, “kettling” a section of a march near
Osterport station, and as they had done on Saturday, cuffed the protesters and
put them onto buses transporting them to a detention centre.
