InvestigateWest photographer arrested covering climate protest in Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN — InvestigateWest photographer Christopher Crow was arrested today by
police wielding batons and accompanied by police dogs. Crow had been
photographing demonstrators trying to shut down Copenhagen’s harbor outside the
United Nations negotiations on climate change.

Crow was taken into custody along with about 275 others. Some 400 to 500
demonstrators had been involved in the protest.

Demonstrators marched roughly six blocks before riot police trapped the group
against a metal railing about 2 1/2 miles from the harbor.

COPENHAGEN POLICE ACCUSED OF VIOLATING HUMAN RIGHTS AT UN CLIMATE SUMMIT

Danish police have indiscriminately arrested hundreds of climate justice
activists during a climate change protest made up of 100,000 people that took
place today in Copenhagen. Questions have been raised about the fact that the
arrests occurred in a different time and place to where some trouble had
momentarily flared earlier in the day. Journalists have been restricted from
reporting at the site of the arrests since 1800hrs.

It’s estimated that 100 people are still being held on the road in extremely
cold weather, cuffed and forced into seated positions in lines (1). They have
expressed severe physical discomfort and have no access to water, medical
attention or toilet facilities since 1530hrs. Many activists are reported to
have urinated themselves while detained on the ground.

Copenhagen police detain 200 climate protesters

Danish police cracked down on protesters outside the UN climate conference in
Copenhagen Sunday, detaining more than 200 people as global environment
ministers met for informal talks.

Riot police halted an unauthorized march that tried to make its way to the
Copenhagen harbour, said police spokesperson Flemming Steen Munch.

According to Munch, police conducted security checks of some of the protesters,
and found bolt-cutters and gas masks during the search of a truck that led the
demonstration.

At least 200 people were detained, Munch said.

COPENHAGEN POLICE CONTINUE ACTS OF UNPROVOKED VIOLENCE ON PROTESTERS

Around 200 demonstrators are currently being forcefully held in the street by
Danish police near the American Embassy in Copenhagen.

The group had assembled as part of the “Hit the Production” demo. Without any
provocation, the police charged violently at the crowd and began arrests,
forcing people to sit on the ground in 2 degree temperatures while cuffed. The
scenes seem to be an exact repetition of the human rights violations from
yesterday.

Danish police arrest 1,225 protesters

COPENHAGEN — As heads of state begin arriving for climate talks in Copenhagen,
jittery police have arrested 1,225 people during two days of demonstrations in
the Danish capital, prompting criticism from activists and the press.

On Sunday, 257 people were arrested after police found stones and gasmasks in a
van connected to an unauthorized protest. On Saturday, 968 others were arrested
at a mass demonstration that attracted more than 60,000 people. Most were
released within a few hours but activists complained that the sweeping arrests
were indiscriminate and heavy handed.

Copenhagen police crackdown 'preplanned': Aussie eyewitness

A POLICE crackdown on climate protesters in Copenhagen in which hundreds were
arrested was preplanned and apparently without justification, according to an
Australian eyewitness.

Simon Sheikh, national director of the progressive Australian lobby group Get
Up, watched the crackdown from his apartment - and has exclusive video footage
of it.

Mr Sheikh said the marchers were peacefully making their way through the
bohemian district of Christianshavn yesterday afternoon when the police moved
in.
