Wolfgang Kaleck und das ECCHR gratulieren Colin Gonsalves zum Right
Livelihood Award

Berlin, 26. September 2017 - Anlässlich der Bekanntgabe des Right Livelihood
Award 2017 für Colin Gonsalves - Mitbegründer und bis heute Direktor des
<http://www.hrln.org/hrln/> Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) aus Indien -
erhalten Sie anbei ein Statement von Wolfgang Kaleck, Generalsekretär des
European Center for Constitutional Rights (

Kaleck hatte die Nominierung von Gonsalves, mit dem das ECCHR seit 2008 eng
zusammenarbeitet, bei der Jury des Right Livelihood Award eingebracht. Als
internationale Menschenrechtsorganisation schätzt sich das ECCHR glücklich,
Gonsalves in seinem  <https://www.ecchr.eu/de/ueber_ecchr/beirat.html>
Beirat zu haben.

Das gesamte Team des ECCHR gratuliert Colin Gonsalves! Er hat den Right
Livelihood Award in jeder Hinsicht verdient, sagte ECCHR-Generalsekretär
Kaleck. Gonsalves unerschütterlicher Kampf für die Rechte der Menschen,
die in Indien unterdrückt, ausgebeutet und ausgrenzt werden, ist
beeindruckend. Seine Arbeit als Anwalt reicht vom Kriegsrecht in Kaschmir
über die Situation der Dalits (dt. Unberührbare), die Gewalt gegen Frauen
in allen Formen, die unrechtmäßig lange Untersuchungshaft bis hin zur
Todesstrafe. Eine derartige Vielfalt habe ich noch bei keinem anderen
Menschenrechtsverteidiger und keiner anderen Organisation erlebt. Ich
bewundere den zutiefst menschlichen Ansatz von Gonsalves und habe größten
Respekt vor seinem scharfen juristischen und politischen Verstand. Als
Menschenrechtsanwalt hat er stets die vielschichtige politische,
wirtschaftliche und soziale Dimension im Blick. Er stellt die herrschenden
Machtverhältnisse in Frage und bietet mächtigen Gegnern die Stirn  nicht
nur in Indien, sondern weltweit. Damit ist er Vorbild für junge Anwält_innen
und Aktivist_innen  ja, für die gesamte Menschenrechtsbewegung. Gonsalves
ist ein sehr würdiger Träger für diesen renommierten Preis. 

HRLN ist ein Netzwerk von Rechtsanwält_innen und Aktivist_innen, die die
Möglichkeiten des Rechts nutzen, um die Menschenrechte in Indien
durchzusetzen. Das ECCHR und HRLN gehören zum 
<http://berthafoundation.org/lawyers/> Bertha Justice Network, einem
internationalen Netzwerk von Menschenrechtsanwält_innen. Als
Partnerorganisationen arbeiten das ECCHR und HRLN eng zusammen, um
transnationale Unternehmen mit Sitz in den USA und Europa für
Menschenrechtsverletzungen beispielweise in Folge von

Livelihood Award 2017 to Colin Gonsalves, co-founder and director of the
<http://www.hrln.org/hrln/> Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) in India, please
find below a statement by Wolfgang Kaleck, General Secretary of the European
Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (

Kaleck nominated Gonsalves, with whom ECCHR has closely cooperated since
2008, for the Right Livelihood Award. As an organization ECCHR is honored
and happy to have Colin on its
<https://www.ecchr.eu/en/about/advisory-board.html> Advisory Board.  

The entire ECCHR team sends their congratulations to Colin Gonsalves! He is
a very deserving winner of the Right Livelihood Award, said Wolfgang
Kaleck, Secretary General of ECCHR. Colin's unwavering struggle for the
oppressed, the exploited and the marginalized in India is truly remarkable.
As a lawyer he has worked on the laws of war in Kashmir, the situation
facing the Dalit (untouchables), violence against women in all its forms,
unlawful pre-trial detention, and the death penalty. I have never seen such
diversity of work in any other human rights defender or organization. I
admire Colin's genuine humanity and have great respect for his keen legal
and political insights. As a human rights lawyer he is ever aware of the
complex political, economic and social dimensions of the work. He questions
existing power relations and takes a strong stand against powerful opponents
in India and worldwide. He is an inspiration for young lawyers around the
world and indeed for the human rights movement as a whole. Colin Gonsalves
is a very worthy recipient of this renowned prize 

HRLN is a collective of lawyers and social activists dedicated to the use of
the legal system to advance human rights in India and the sub-continent.
ECCHR and HRLN are both members of the  Bertha
<http://berthafoundation.org/lawyers/>  Justice Network, an international
network of human rights lawyers. As partner organizations they have been
working together closely in cases related to the legal responsibility of
transnational companies based in the US and Europe for human rights
violations in India due to the use of

pesticides and
<https://www.ecchr.eu/en/our_work/business-and-human-rights/clinical-trials.
html> clinical trials. Within the Bertha Global Exchange Program HRLN staff

case work.
