G8 SUMMIT Blair says leaders 'hate' conducting talks behind security cordon
GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AFX) - Leaders of the world's richest nations 'hate'
having to conduct their talks behind a security cordon designed to keep out
protestors, said Prime Minister Tony Blair.
In an interview on Sky News, Blair said most leaders 'would be happy to be in a
modest little place where we can mix with lots of people in a town and be able
to meet the people who's concerns we're talking about'.
Blair was speaking after several hundred protestors broke away from a march and
tried to storm the summit venue perimeter fence before being beaten back by
police.
'The problem is you get these small groups of international anarchists who just
wreck the place and therefore you have to have the security,' he said.
'It's a common myth that the leaders all love the fact that you've got to have a
fence of steel around us. We hate it. Most of us would prefer to be in a
situation where we could engage with people.'
'If you were to hold this in Edinburgh, which would have been fantastic, it
would have brought the whole city to a halt,' he added.

CALL PRISONER SUPPORT at 079 14 79 57 37 to find out if your friend is on remand
The police detain people and can hold them for a limited time in a police
station. Then they are brought to court for a hearing. The magistrate (low
level judge) either decides to release them without charges or decides to
charge them. If the latter is the case s/he can either decide to give bail
(which means they get released under special restrictions until their trial) or
to keep people on remand, which means that people are brought to prisons and
held there until their trial.
At the moment different prisons in Scotland are used for helding protestors on
remand.
If you know that your friend is being held on remand, there are different things
you can do to support her/him:
Write letters, visit her/him (normally once per day), get money in so s/he can
buy stuff inside the prison and make phonecalls...
Every prison has different rules and regulations on that. Following you find
specific information for the different prisons.

Prisoners Latest
Tuesday, July 12th, 2005
The 5 men who have spent a week in prison in Edinburgh (Saughton prison) and
were heard in court today, got released on bail. This means at the moment there
is one man left in Edinburgh prison, arrested during G8 protests but now held
for other unrelated matters.
There are two women in Stirling (Cornton Vale prison). One convicted for
previous unpaid fines, probably out on friday, one on remand until court on
friday.
There are two men in Glasgow (Barlinnie prison). One convicted for previous
faslane stuff, one on remand.
This also from Indymedia:
ACAB released after 5 nights in solitary
Gary Lawson better known to some of us as ACAB was released today from Edinburgh
sheriffs court after spending 8 days in saughton prison in relation to the
carnival for full enjoyment in Edinburgh. ACAB and others (including a 16 year
old boy) were held on remand since last monday and their cases were heard in a
closed court with no members of the public or journalists allowed in. ACAB was
placed in solitary confinement after alledgedly calling one of the prison
guards a "Haggis Shagger". Almost all of those remanded after the carnival have
now been released apart from those with outstanding fines or warrants.
